gategroup’s return to the World Travel Catering & Onboard Services Expo (WTCE) in Hamburg was one of the defining features of this year’s event, with the company’s full occupation of Hall A2 effectively setting the tone for both the scale and direction of innovation on display.
Marking its 95th anniversary, the catering group used the space to present an integrated vision of onboard hospitality, bringing together culinary concepts, digital tools and operational systems in a single showcase.
The move signalled not only a return to the exhibition floor, but, as Nele Wallays, Director, Customer Experience at gategroup, noted ahead of the show, an opportunity to “showcase our solutions to our valued customers” at a key moment for the industry.
That timing was reflected on site. “The aviation industry is entering a new phase of growth and innovation,” said Wallays, with passenger expectations increasingly shaped by the quality and diversity of ground-based experiences.
The scale and structure of the Hall A2 presence suggested a response to that shift, with a focus on delivering consistency and quality at global scale.

Innovation with gatehorizon
At the centre of the stand was gatehorizon, gategroup’s innovation platform, which framed much of the conversation across the three days.
Through project showcases and direct engagement with specialist teams, including gateopex, the company demonstrated how structured production methodologies are being applied to improve flow, consistency and efficiency across complex catering environments.
Insight with Black Swan
Data and predictive insight were also positioned as central pillars. The group highlighted its collaboration with Black Swan Data, using AI and social data to anticipate passenger preferences and inform planning decisions earlier in the process.
“We can utilise our meal and food data set to observe across regions what are the type of meal, types, ingredients or snacks that we should begin to consider to really drive that culinary vision,” said Michael Donaldson, Director Insights and Consulting, Black Swan Data.
“Black Swan is a social prediction, not a social listening a company. With everything that we provide, we can forecast out how they’re going to trend over the next 12, 24, 36, months and that is critical because to actually develop a menu takes time.”

Profiling partners
A notable aspect of the showcase was the visibility given to partners. Companies including MEIKO Group, RATIONAL AG and TCR were presented as integral to delivering operational performance across areas such as kitchen systems, equipment and ground support. This echoed Wallays’ broader point that the future of onboard hospitality will be built through “creativity, collaboration, and innovation”, with gategroup positioning itself at the centre of a wider ecosystem.

Taste of success
Of course, culinary execution remained a key point of engagement. Daily Chef’s Table experiences translated trend-led thinking into menus designed for onboard adaptation, exploring globally influenced dining, heritage-led comfort food and more sustainability-focused approaches.
The activation reflected the company’s culinary expertise, brought to life in a format that balanced inspiration with operational reality.
The hall takeover positioned gategroup as both a major exhibitor and an advocate for wider industry priorities, with its presence underscoring a shift towards integrated, collaborative and data-informed models of delivery.
