SkyLights’ Cinematic VR introduced onboard KiwiRail ferries

Passengers on KiwiRails’ Interislander ferry service in New Zealand can now access Cinematic VR entertainment onboard.

Furnished by immersive entertainment specialist SkyLights’, the VR cinema glasses provide customers with their own private movie theatre where they can enjoy the latest 2D and 3D blockbuster films as well as travel and relaxation content.

The service is available to passengers travelling on KiwiRails’ three Interislander ferries. It is available for free in the onboard Plus lounges and to rent elsewhere onboard for NZ$20 per adult and $15 per child.

Passengers will be able to choose from a catalogue featuring recent films as well as documentaries. There are also separate headsets with programming for children.

The decision to deploy this new type of entertainment follows the success of a two-month pilot program, in which 92% of passengers were either very satisfied or satisfied with the service and is a major milestone in Skylights strategy to expand beyond its origins in the airline industry.

“Waiting times, whether inflight or on a ship, offer an ideal opportunity to discover the unique and memorable entertainment experiences that VR has to offer. This industry-first is an exciting step forward in establishing premium immersive entertainment as a part of people’s daily lives,” said David Dicko, SkyLights’ CEO.
