Belgian artisan butter maker L&L Plaquette is making waves in the premium catering sector after its zero-plastic butter portion secured a major win at the Gulfood Dubai awards.
The Vegetable Parchment Papillote – a hand-wrapped single portion designed to replace traditional industrial plastic cups – was named Best Innovation Dairy Product, beating over 250 global candidates and industry giants.
Crafted from 100% plant-based, compostable paper, the solution offers a high-end aesthetic while addressing the need for plastic reduction in the galley.
Based in Belgium and dating back to 1830, L&L Plaquette is one of the country’s last remaining traditional butter makers. The sixth-generation family business already supplies Michelin-starred chefs and luxury hotels as well as, increasingly, airline carriers.
Lufthansa has already adopted the packaging as its new standard for Business Class service. By making the switch, the airline is set to remove millions of single-use plastic units from its operation annually.
Beyond the environmental benefits, the production of these portions also carries a social impact. L&L Plaquette has partnered with local sheltered workshops to assist with the packaging process, supporting employment for people with disabilities.
“This victory proves that the future of luxury travel lies in the marriage of high gastronomy and environmental responsibility,” said owner Lionel Plaquette.
