Sustainable design house Milk has developed a “groundbreaking” new vegan leather made entirely from recycled and sustainable materials.
The company, which has designed onboard products for TUI, Oman Air, Jet2, Emirates, Etihad and other airlines, claims the material is a first for the industry at scale.
The 100% recycled PVC upper is certified by the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) and is paired with a backing made from bamboo and cactus fibres, both natural, renewable, and low-impact materials.
Milk claims the product sets a new benchmark in environmental responsibility and also delivers on aesthetics and durability.
Most mass-producible vegan leathers today rely on recycled PU,which unfortunately still contains virgin polyurethane,” said a spokesperson for Milk.
“We searched extensively for a supply chain capable of producing a fully recycled alternative, but none existed – so we built one. This new material is the result of deep collaboration and shared vision with our supply chain partners.”
According to Milk, the new material is a viable option for mass production without sacrificing eco-credentials.
Milk is currently conducting laboratory testing to validate further performance standards.
“While certifications are pending, the company is confident in meeting all necessary requirements,” added the spokesperson.
“This material opens up a new world of possibility for brands looking to combine ethics, performance, and affordability — without compromise.”
