Hello Straw targets airlines with innovative paper cup

Hello Straw, the specialist in sustainable high-quality paper products, has launched a paper cup suitable for both hot, cold and high-alcohol drinks.

Claiming a world first, the Hague-based company said the cup is ideal for airlines who are looking to save space and weight onboard.

It also eliminates the need for airlines to source multiple types of cup for their inflight drinks service.

The cups were demonstrated during a Dragon’s Den-style event at the ACA (Airline Catering Association) Leadership Symposium in Toulouse.

Catering specialists watched a demonstration where high-alcohol gin and vodka was poured into the cups to show the cups’ durability.

The cups have been developed and tested to be as durable as plastic cups.

Hello Straw started out by developing a U-shaped paper straw to replace plastic straws for aseptic Tetra Pak packages.

In 2020 it launched a range of paper cutlery which is used by Harrods, Burger King and KFC, and in 2022 it created the first ice cream paper sticks to replace wooden ones.

Some of its products are already being used on airlines including SWISS, Edelweiss Air and Sunclass.

Hello Straw, which also has offices in Maidenhead, UK, is currently working on a project to convert its paper waste into sustainable aviation fuel and says every seven tonnes of product can be recycled into 1 tonne of fuel.
