easyJet has marked the official opening of its new base at Newcastle Airport with a culinary collaboration featuring iconic local brand Greggs.
To celebrate the airline’s 11th UK base, easyJet has teamed up with the cult-favourite British bakery chain that originated in Newcastle to launch a limited-edition range of “Destination Dips” for the brand’s iconic sausage rolls.
Passengers travelling on international easyJet flights departing from Newcastle on launch day were treated to complimentary pastries and dipping sauces mid-air.
The partnership has also seen cabin crew stroll the streets of Newcastle to distribute free pastries along with the new globally-inspired sauces.
These “Destination Dips” represent easyJet’s new flight paths, but with a creative twist.
Limited-edition flavours include:
- Italy (Affogato): A blend of roasted coffee, cocoa and vanilla bean.
- France (Tarte Tatin): Caramelised apple, cinnamon and thyme.
- Tunisia (Harissa Ketchup): A spicy-sweet fusion of tomato, date and pomegranate.
- Spain (Sangria): Infused with red wine, orange and cranberry.
- Turkey (Kebab): A savory mix of lemon, vinegar and smoky paprika.
Garry Wilson, CEO of easyJet holidays, noted that the partnership with a “Geordie institution” like Greggs was the perfect way to acknowledge the local culture while celebrating a major corporate milestone. “Offering sausage rolls onboard and in the streets is our way of thanking the North East as we continue to make travel from their local airport easy and affordable,” he said.
The opening of the Newcastle base represents a significant operational expansion for easyJet. The site will now house three based aircraft and the airline says it will support approximately 1,200 jobs in the region, including 140 direct positions for pilots and crew.
The investment has allowed the carrier to increase its capacity from the airport by 85% compared to last summer. The airline now operates 86 flights per week to 22 destinations across Europe and North Africa. New routes added to the schedule include popular leisure spots such as Antalya, Nice, Rome, Sharm-El-Sheikh and Tenerife.
