Sweet success
Feb 12: Brinkers Cakes and Desserts has won a US$1.2 million contract to supply desserts to BA's US caterers for use in the World Traveller Cabin from North America over the next 12 months.  With the eurofs strength against the dollar, combined with duty free prices, Brinkers is able to offer very competitive rates and is able to compete with the best of American suppliers in the marketplace. Brinkers will be supplying the US with 2.4 million desserts over the next 12 months, serving up sticky toffee pudding during the winter months and mango passion cheesecake during the summer.

Fun and comfort

Feb 12: A group of Air New Zealanders, industrial designers, Boeing and seat manufacturers have come up with some great new design ideas which will add a whole new dimension to long haul travel in all classes. They include the Economy Skycouch and the Premium Economy Spaceseat licensed to Recaro and Contour. A new foot bean-bag style cushion called Otto enables Premium Economy passengers to create their own position for sleeping rather than being restrained by a leg rest.

Second luxury-cruise ferry

Feb 12:Brittany Ferries has added another luxury cruise-ferry to its fleet to provide an additional two round-trips weekly on the Plymouth-Santander route. The company now offers four UK-Spain car and passenger services every week: three from Portsmouth and one from Plymouth. Amorique joins the companyfs flagship, Pont Aven, with which it has many features in common, notably its high cruising speed for a crossing time from Portsmouth of 24 hours. It has 244 cabins, all with ensuite facilities, to accommodate up to 1,500 passengers. It also features a swimming pool, choice of restaurants, shopping, bars, live entertainment and movie lounge.

Fleet efficiency and consistency

Feb 12: An investment of around US$300 million per year over the next three years is being made by Delta Air Lines to improve services for BusinessElite, First and elite-level flyers. Fleet improvements are also planned, instead of buying new aircraft, and Northwest aircraft will be given the Delta blue leather signature seat to give consistency throughout. Upgrades include full flat-bed seats in BusinessElite; in-seat audio and video on demand throughout Economy and the introduction of First cabins on some regional aircraft. Fuel efficiency will also be improved by as much as five percent following the installation of winglets on 170 aircraft.

Cremoni deal for Spain

Feb 12: Onboard Retail Solutions has been awarded a four year contract by Cremonini Rail Iberica (CRI) and Renfe. The deal provides all onboard catering and logistics services for the Renfe rail network in Spain at the end of 2009 and is using Onboard for all its POS technology.

Economy comfort

Feb 12: The new Economy Comfort zone product recently unveiled by KLM offers Economy passengers a greater range of seating comfort, including up to 10cm of extra legroom and twice the recline of a standard seat. Economy Comfort passengers will also be able to disembark first as the zone is in the front section of the Economy cabin. Service and meals are the same as those in Economy. Every day, KLM will have more than 1,500 of the new seats available, for which the nominal fee will range from EUR 80 to EUR 150 for a one-way trip, depending on the distance covered.

US Airways extends catering contract

Feb 12: In December LSG Sky Chefs won an extension of its current agreement with US Airways, covering 46 locations worldwide and more than 1000 flights a day. The service includes complimentary f&b, buy-on-board and box-meal service on selected flights. The locations served include more than 30 stations in the US, and cities in Scandinavia, Belgium, the UK, Italy, Germany, Portugal and Switzerland. LSG Sky Cheffs equipment design team was recently recognised with the French Design Council's "Observeur du Design" award, for inflight equipment designs developed for Corsairfly's Economy tray set.

International trademark

Feb 12: In November Servair announced that it was redeploying its brand strategy, and unveiled its updated logo. In order to actively develop its network - 60 sites across four continents - Servair says it aims to offer its customers an international trademark that is clearer and more accessible. The Servair trademark will now be displayed wherever a catering operation exists, either Servair-owned or via investments, partnerships and technical assistance. Servairfs other activities will display the same visual identity via a common symbol, the Servair flame. Servair is currently the No.1 caterer in France and Africa, and the third largest worldwide.

New Clubhouse for Gatwick

Feb 12: Among features of the new Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse at Gatwick are a Cowshed Spa, a waiter-serviced restaurant, lounge, bar, entertainment lounge, business area, and a family lounge with a playground for toddlers and kidsf TV channels. In The Snug passengers can catch up on the latest TV, news or movies. Virgin says the addition of the Cowshed Spa and Internal Rock Garden provides a new focal point for the Clubhouse, with its porcelain slates, natural stone mosaic floors and black glass mosaic tiled walls.

Feb 12:
Danish design house Georg Jensen has teamed up with Qantas to produce a luxury amenity range for the airlinefs First cabin. The kits feature Jensenfs signature stainless finishes and contain French cosmetics from Payot. The designer-collaboration range was delivered to Qantas by Buzz Products.

Cleaner in-flight air

Feb 12:
BAE Systems has joined forces with Quest International UK to introduce AirManager, setting a new standard for clean air on board. The product uses CCFT (Close Coupled Field Technology), a contained electrical field that eliminates smells and destroys airborne pathogens and toxins.

Sydney success
Feb 12: China Airlines has contracted Alpha to run its catering and associated services out of Sydney. The airline has four A330 flights per week into Taipei. Alpha started China Airlinesf Brisbane catering in early November 2009 and will soon be opening a new kitchen in Sydney to give additional capacity.

Joint venture for Heathrow

Feb 12:
The new Alpha-Airfayre business at Heathrow, reported in our last issue, finally came into being in November. Autogrill Groupfs flight division Alpha and Journey Group, the flight services and logistics specialist, entered a joint venture to manage inflight catering operations at London/Heathrow. Alpha-Airfayre Ltd (51 per cent Alpha; 49 per cent Journey Group,) will use both companiesf existing units at the airport to prepare around 30,000 meals a day for 18 international airlines. Annual turnover will be around ’70m.

iPODs for everyone

Feb 12:
Etihad says it is offering passengers one of the worldfs most comprehensive inflight entertainment systems with its new Panasonic eX2 equipment. Features include an iPOD connector in every seat on the aircraft, for playing and recharging iPODS, with an additional RCA connection in First and Business making it possible to connect other portable entertainment devices to the IFE system; an easy-to-use interactive interface in Arabic and English; and a specially designed interface for children under 12, featuring a sub-set of all the entertainment options for a younger audience.

Internet trials

Feb 12:
Late last year Air Canada began trials to offer its customers Gogo(R) inflight internet service on board selected flights on the Toronto-Los Angeles and Montreal-Los Angeles routes. The system will enable passengers to email, work and surf the net. Ultimate rollout will be finalised depending on the outcome of the trial period, as well as obtaining regulatory approval and the development of ground infrastructure in Canada to provide a domestic network.
